Grace, Gratitude, and the Year Ahead

Vennie Gore, EVPA

We are nearly at the end of January, and here in East Lansing, winter is reminding us that it still has a strong hold. Hopefully, the cold days are starting to move behind us. I know that may be wishful thinking, but I remain hopeful for warmer days ahead.

I used to begin each year with resolutions — get fitter, spend more time with family, develop new skills, or meet new people. Then I had a conversation with a team member who reminded me that those aspirations are part of everyday life, not something new we suddenly decide to pursue in January. Corey was, as usual, smarter, and wiser than me.

One thing that has not changed is change itself. As we move into 2026, we know a few things for certain. More than 50,000 students will live, learn, play, and, ultimately, graduate. Along the way, we will experience success and plenty of learning opportunities—far more growth than failure. We will gain new information or, perhaps more accurately, new perspectives. I have learned to say, “I didn’t know that, and now I do.” What I hope for most is that we continue this journey together with grace and gratitude.

We will welcome new team members, and we will say goodbye to others as they take on new roles or enter retirement. As we learned early on, the world continues to change and evolve. Maybe New Year’s resolutions are less about starting something new and more about being resolute in who we are and how we show up for one another.

We are stronger together. That is the Spartan way. I look forward to 2026 and to the magic we will make along the way.
