The Home Stretch, and What Comes Next

Vennie Gore, EVPA

Team,

It has been a while since I last wrote a blog. I wish I had one major update to share, but the truth is, there has simply been a lot happening across campus. Some of it is exciting like our men’s basketball team has advanced to the Sweet 16 and men’s hockey is a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. As always, it is a great time to be a Spartan.

As we move into April and the final stretch of the semester, our focus turns to the students we serve every day. In just a few weeks, more than 10,000 Spartans will graduate and take their next steps. They will leave campus shaped not only by what they learned in the classroom, but by the experiences, support and opportunities they found along the way. That happens because of you.

Over the past several weeks, your impact has been on full display across our campus, reaching not only our students, but also the many guests and visitors we have welcomed. Our teams have supported multiple large-scale events, including two statewide basketball tournaments and the National Collegiate Landscape Competition. These moments bring thousands of visitors to campus and showcase MSU not only as a university, but as a place that welcomes, hosts and serves a broader community. They require coordination across many units, and they reflect the collective effort, care and professionalism that define how we support our students, guests and partners. While these events highlight just a portion of the work underway, they only scratch the surface of the many efforts across our teams that don’t always get recognized but are vital to delivering these outcomes.

As we celebrate that impact, we are also looking ahead to what comes next. The upcoming soft opening of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center on April 15, with continued testing through the summer, is an important milestone. We are also monitoring enrollment trends, including a slight decline in the Fall 2025 first-year class. The work we have done over the past few years has positioned us well, and it reminds us that how we operate every day matters.

This is the nature of our work. We finish strong for one class while preparing to welcome the next. In just a few short months, a new group of students will arrive on campus, bringing energy, expectations and the start of their Spartan journey. The experiences they will have begin with the work we are doing right now.

Thank you for all you have done this year and for the work still ahead. I appreciate your commitment to our students and to Michigan State University. Let’s finish strong and continue building the experiences that make this place special.

GO GREEN!
