Sustainability Systems Think Tank

As we look toward 2030, MSU is committed to becoming a more contemporary institution—achieving greater effectiveness through next-generation operations and organizational alignment. Our goals surrounding sustainability are to balance the economic, social, and environmental priorities of today while protecting those resources for the future.

To advance this commitment, the MSU Office of Sustainability has launched the Sustainability Systems Think Tank (SSTT)—a cross-functional team charged with providing thought leadership and developing a comprehensive framework to guide campus sustainability efforts. These conversations will include colleagues, both within and outside of MSU.

This 12-month initiative will:

  • Shape long-term program direction by prioritizing policies and practices that position MSU as a living laboratory for sustainability teaching, research, and operations.
  • Engage key stakeholders and informants through one-on-one conversations to capture diverse perspectives on sustainability at the university and the MSU Office of Sustainability.
  • Gather broad community input in phase two by gathering broad input from students, faculty, and staff this fall through interactive community input sessions. More details will be available soon.

A preliminary data analysis is planned through fall 2025. These learnings will be used to inform a forward-looking framework that bridges academics, operations, and outreach, positioning the university not only as a model of sustainability in higher education but also as a leader in shaping sustainable futures along the banks of the Red Cedar and beyond.
