Michigan State University’s inaugural Pitch Day, hosted by the Office of the Executive Vice President for Administration and the Innovation Lab, brought together staff from across the EVPA portfolio (MSUIT, HR, DPPS, RHS, IPF) to share innovative ideas aimed at improving the way we operate. Held on Nov. 19 in the STEM Building, the event was designed to generate energy and inspire innovation across the portfolio, encouraging participants to think differently about how we work to increase efficiency, enhance customer satisfaction, and deliver greater value to our stakeholders.
Inspired by ABC’s Shark Tank, Pitch Day provides a platform for individuals and teams to present bold, creative ideas with the potential to improve, transform, or elevate unit operations. Out of 102 ideas submitted, 18 were selected to present to a panel of judges for the chance to advance to the Incubation Phase, where they will receive guidance, refinement, and support from unit leaders, subject-matter experts, and the Innovation Lab team to potentially bring these concepts to life. Each idea had the opportunity to receive up to $10,000 toward implementation.
Throughout the event, presenters highlighted opportunities to streamline processes, strengthen communication, enhance safety, and support employees in their day-to-day work. Ideas ranged from technology enhancements to customer-service improvements, reflecting the wide range of innovative thinking across the portfolio.
Ideas moving forward (both fully and partially) from Pitch Day are:
In addition, the following ideas were chosen to move forward immediately within their units because of their feasibility and ease of implementation:
| Idea | Spartan Submitter | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Improve mailroom bin accessibility in Brody | Shana Burke | RHS |
| Improve back dock overcrowding and safety concerns at 1855 place | Anthony Burke | RHS |
| Launch Copilot learning sessions | Matt Stehouwer | MSU IT |
The Pitch Day celebration wrapped up with a chance to connect with colleagues, celebrate creativity, and reflect on the inspiring ideas shared throughout the morning. During the celebration luncheon on December 5, each participant received a certificate honoring their contribution and reinforcing that every idea is impactful.
The Innovation Lab team is excited to build on this momentum and will continue to elevate the voices and ideas of the Spartan community throughout the year. Thank you to all who participated!
