Web Header Winter Weather (1)

January 23, 2026

Spartan community,

After a thorough review of local weather conditions, information available through the National Weather Service, and in response to community inquiries, university leadership and the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety have made the decision to maintain the regular schedule of classes, scheduled events and campus operations through the weekend.

Classes and campus operations will continue as normal, including the CATA bus schedule. We recognize that winter weather can create unexpected challenges. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts, current conditions, and emergency alerts, and to use sound judgment when evaluating travel and personal circumstances.

If winter weather affects your ability to attend class or work safely, please work with your instructor or supervisor to discuss your situation and reasonable accommodations. We encourage leaders to approach these situations with empathy and flexibility. Please refer to the winter weather safety page for more information and resources.

Cold weather safety tips:
•    Dress in layers and cover exposed skin.
•    Choose loose, layered clothing, which provides better insulation and helps retain body heat.
•    Be alert for slippery conditions and use caution when walking outdoors.
•    Protect extremities in the cold. Wear waterproof, insulated boots, warm gloves/mittens, and cover your ears and face. A hat is especially important, as significant heat is lost through the head.

Our Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF) teams are actively working around the clock to maintain roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and facilities ensuring they remain as clear and safe as possible during the current weather conditions. To report an issue with snow removal, heating or cooling, or another facility related issue, please contact (517) 353-1760. For areas near university residence halls, please report them to the facilities team for that building.

The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety will be monitoring the weather closely over the next several days and will keep the Spartan community apprised of any changes that may result in reduced or modified operations. We also encourage all Spartans to download the SafeMSU app, which provides quick access to alerts, resources, and emergency information right from your mobile device.

We encourage everyone to take precautions, look out for one another, and support your fellow Spartans whenever possible during winter weather events.

Sincerely,
Mike Yankowski, Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety
