MSU Re-evaluates Space for the South Campus Farms

Cost Savings: $5-7 million in deferred maintenance costs | Infrastructure Planning and Facilities | Fall 2024
In partnership with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, MSU is demolishing 22 deteriorating structures across the south campus farms to create 66,000 square feet of usable space for future agricultural and educational needs. This initiative improves safety and maximizes space for growing crops essential to beef and dairy operations, while maintaining infrastructure for future agricultural development.

IPF Landscape Services Hosts Health Fair for Staff

Services Provided: Free Health Screenings and Wellness Resources | IPF Landscape Services | Fall 2024

IPF Landscape Services partnered with the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Community Integrated Medicine student organization to host a health fair focused on staff wellness. Medical students provided free health screenings, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose tests, along with one-on-one consultations on nutrition, healthy lifestyles, cancer screenings, and vaccinations. Future health fairs will be scheduled to ensure all IPF departments have access to these services.

IPF: Best-in-Class Inventory Management

Cost Savings: $793,962 | Infrastructure Planning and Facilities | FY2024
With over eleven thousand purchase orders from over 300 different vendors, the Material & Logistics department (M&L) recorded a trackable cost savings of $793,962 and has maintained an annual .5 percent inventory variance over the last five years. As a benchmark, anything less than 2 percent is considered high performance, and anything less than 1 percent is industry standard best-in-class.

Printing Services Optimization

Annual Savings: $170,000   |  MSU Information Technology   |  May 2024
MSU Information Technology (MSU IT) has re-evaluated the MSU print landscape and reduced low traffic printers, creating an annual cost avoidance of 34%, saving approximately $170,000 per year. We aim to create a future state of financial stability and environmental sustainability for MSU printing services, aligned with MSU’s 2030 Strategic Plan. We set out with a goal to maintain print productivity even with the reduction in devices, and we are now aimed at providing higher service quality with newer and more efficient machines in the highest traffic areas, enhancing the customer experience.

MSU IT Mainframe Decommissioning 

Annual Savings: $1.2 million | MSU Information Technology | Summer 2023
In summer 2023, the MSU Mainframe was decommissioned and removed from the Data Center. This transition to more efficient, sustainable, and secure technologies has resulted in annual savings of $1.2 million in maintenance expenses. Additionally, over 700,000 files were successfully transferred to Campus Solutions and SIS. As part of this effort, dial-up internet services were also discontinued due to low utilization, giving way to more cost-effective alternatives.

Annual Savings: $408,000 | MSU Information Technology | Spring 2023
Michigan State University Information Technology (MSU IT) implemented TeamDynamix (TDX), a comprehensive support ticket and project management system, in Spring 2023. With a goal to streamline service delivery and integrate management systems across campus, this initiative has achieved an initial cost savings of $408,000 annually. Since its launch, TDX has streamlined MSU IT’s ticket intake process, enhancing the user experience. This sets the stage for future financial stability and sustainability within MSU IT, in line with MSU's 2030 Strategic Plan.
