Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Small Business Summit?

  • The Small Business Summit is an outreach event hosted by Michigan State University to connect with small, underrepresented, local suppliers – to include entrepreneurs, business owners, and tier one partners. It provides resources and information to help businesses learn how to engage with MSU’s procurement process.

Who should attend?

  • Current and prospective vendors, entrepreneurs, and small business owners—especially those who are local and underrepresented — who are interested in doing business with MSU.

What can I expect to learn at the event?

  • Attendees will gain insight on how to become a registered supplier for MSU, learn about upcoming opportunities, understand MSU’s procurement policies, and have an opportunity to network and build relationships with MSU departmental leaders and procurement staff.

When and where is the event taking place?

  • The summit will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center on MSU’s campus.

Is there a cost to attend?

  • There is no cost to attend the Small Business Summit, but registration is required due to limited space.

How does this event support supplier inclusion?

  • MSU is committed to fostering a more inclusive and competitive procurement environment. This event helps broaden access for qualified suppliers of all sizes and backgrounds.

What is supplier inclusion, and how does it differ from affirmative action?

  • Supplier inclusion is a strategy that ensures qualified businesses—especially small, underrepresented, and local suppliers—can participate in Michigan State University’s procurement process. Unlike affirmative action, supplier inclusion focuses on expanding access for all qualified suppliers while ensuring that contracts are awarded based on merit, not identity. It supports competition, drives innovation, and strengthens the supply chain by fostering a more open and effective procurement environment.

How do recent federal DEI policy changes affect MSU’s supplier inclusion efforts?

  • While recent executive orders may impact some diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, they do not prohibit inclusive supplier programs. MSU continues to view supplier inclusion as a critical strategy for promoting competition, economic opportunity, and innovation. These programs remain compliant and effective by focusing on merit-based evaluation within a wide, competitive supplier pool—ensuring opportunity, not preference.
