2024 EVPA DEI Programming

The following table details the current education and training offered to all EVPA employees and units: Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, Information Technology, Human Resources, University Procurement and Logistics, and Sustainability. The following trainings and professional development opportunities are strategically structured for employees diverse learning needs and levels of knowledge around DEI.

These trainings are offered through EBS for registration in partnership with MSU HR Organizational and Professional Development department. Departmental, team, or unit specific offerings as well as customized offerings are supported via request to evpa.dei@msu.edu.

Professional Development & Events

EVPA DEI partners with experts—both internal and external—to MSU to provide valued educational opportunities specific to the needs of the EVPA workforce. The 2024 DEI programming hosted by EVPA DEI features multiple sessions for staff and leadership around topics from the results of the 2022 Climate Survey. See the table below for more information about sessions, presenters, and topics.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are ongoing commitments that go beyond one book or training session. They aim to reduce harm and recognize that culture and people change over time. Our available resources further support these efforts, providing tools and guidance to foster an inclusive environment.

Trainings

The required pre-requisite is Cultural Competency I. Participants will engage in deep dialogue around power and privilege, positionality, intersectionality, and how these dynamics impact relationships in the workplace. Participants will learn ways to improve communication and treatment of team members and learn actionable practices and strategies.

Crafted for MSU employees in leadership roles, participants will learn how to identify elements of cultural competence and self-awareness. Participants will learn about barriers to cultural competency and will be provided strategies to continue improving inclusive practices in the workplace.

The Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (ICS) is a cross-cultural assessment tool which measures participants core approach for resolving conflicts. Participants will increase cultural self-understanding and learn about their conflict resolution approach and other strategies used in the workplace. Participants will learn to respect and honor diverse communication patterns and conflict resolution styles across cultural difference. This workshop is 2 days.

The Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) is a cross-cultural tool that assesses an individual or team’s capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to ensure inclusivity. This tool can be leveraged to learn more about your individual or team’s ability to deeply understand differences between cultures and solve complex problems in a diverse workplace.

Participants will learn appropriate and respectful ways to use names and pronouns to promote gender inclusivity in the workplace. Participants will understand why safety and privacy around gender, names, and pronouns matter, as well as how to recover when mistakes happen.

Participants will learn the differences between race, ethnicity, and indigeneity while honoring nuance rather than absolute truth. Participants will learn about the diversity of MSU, as well as practice appropriate and respectful ways to address colleagues in the workplace while confronting assumptions and stereotypes.

The required pre-requisite is Cultural Competency I. The required pre-requisite is Leading with Cultural Competency or Cultural Competency I. Participants will work on building mutual respect in the workplace while understanding and valuing cultural difference as a leader. Participants will reflect on their current leadership strategies and understand how “power with” frameworks lead to inclusive leadership practices.
